PRIMARY school children in Bury are being challenged to put their creativie skills to the test and complete the work of well-known writers in the Write Here, Write Now 2004 awards.

Youngsters, aged eight to ten, will be given the opportunity to complete a story by Gillian Cross, a poem by Brian Patten, a piece of persuasive writing by Nick Arnold or follow journalism advice from Lizo Mzimba to create a news report.

Teachers will also be able to nominate children who have shown significant progress with their writing -- while despite needing extra encouragement and support -- for an Improvement award.

The awards, run by the Department for Education and Skills, supports the Primary Strategy 'Excellence and Enjoyment' to promote excellence in teaching and encourage children to have fun with writing.

The regional and national winners will have their work published in an Oxford University Press book.

Other prizes will include Adobe software, Epson digital cameras and printers, Granada Learning software and Legoland Windsor visits.

Teachers can apply for Write Here, Write Now packs, including activity sheets, teacher's notes and writing tips, by visiting www.writehere.org.uk or calling 01634 729825.

The closing date for entries is July 14 and all entries must come through schools.
