TURNOUT in this year's Pendle elections is already higher than the previous local and European election.

Council figures released yesterday showed that 44 per cent of votes have already been cast, compared to 43 per cent in last year's local elections and 23 per cent in the last European elections, held in 1999.

The turnout figure was expected to rise still further before the polls close at 10pm tonight.

People can return ballot papers at any time before voting closes by taking them in person to the assistance and delivery point at Nelson Town Hall.

Returning officer Stephen Barnes said: "We urge electors to have their say in the way their local council and the region is government.

"We want as many people as possible to participate in the democratic process and there is still time to get back your ballot.

"It is evident that the postal pilot has increased turnout for both the European and local elections which is good news."

Anyone requiring help to cast their vote can go to Nelson Town Hall or call 01282 661919.

Results for the local elections will be declared as soon as possible after polls close tonight and results for the European elections will be declared after 9pm on Sunday.
