POLICE in Pendle are urging people to deter burglars by keep their doors and windows locked, despite the warm temperatures.

The appeal follows two burglaries in Colne this week, in which offenders are thought to have used insecure doors and windows to enter homes.

In the most recent incident, a portable CD player and two bottles of champagne were taken from a home in Alkincoats Road.

Police have pledged to target that road and the surrounding area to catch the offender.

Inspector Martin Holleran said: "Burglary in Colne and West Craven is down by 50 per cent this year but we are concerned to ensure this summer blip doesn't become a trend.

"It's the issue of warm evenings and warm days where people are leaving back doors open and burglars are entering their houses.

"I would like to warn residents, particularly in the Colne area, to be vigilant.

"People need to be mindful of not leaving doors open when they are not in the room and not leaving windows open overnight."

While no burglaries related to open doors or windows have been reported in Nelson this week.

PS Martin Stuart at Nelson police station added: "This is a problem in the summer."
