A RADCLIFFE-based threads firm has spun an eco-award.

A&E Threads took an honour at the Business Commitment to the Environment awards for its "green" energy conservation strategies.

The textile company, with 70 staff, received the premier award for its sustainable business programme.

The firm had harnessed strategic advice and local support from Groundwork Bury's Business Environment Association.

A&E Threads, based in Chapelfield, brought in energy conservation measures, recycling initiatives, pollution control, improved conditions for employees, cost savings and contact with the local community.

The firm aims to achieve zero waste for production and has established recycling partners to re-use office waste, scrap thread, waste plastics, packing and glass.

A&E Threads has developed new machinery, using oxidizer technology, which removes the majority of volatile organic compounds from nylon bonding operations.

This has reduced energy use by 50 per cent.

Mrs Sue Muckle, director of manufacturing, said: "This is a marvellous achievement. Despite difficult trading conditions, we have stayed committed to our environmental action plan and the results of our labour have been rewarded."

Paul Haunch, executive director of Groundwork Bury, said: "I am delighted with the success of A&E Threads.

"They are a glowing beacon of light to what can be achieved in environmental management.
