LEIGH Sportsman Harriers ended their season on a high by beating Leigh East in the Holden Cup final at Hilton Park to become the only open age rugby club in Leigh to win anything this season.

The match was entertaining and hard fought. Harriers opened the scoring with a penalty from Chris Dootson this was quickly followed by a try from speedy fullback Stuart Pilkington, Dootson converting.

East's only score of the first half was a penalty goal.

After winning a scrum 30 metres away from the East's line, Paul Wilcock easily outpaced his markers to score an excellent try.

At the restart the ball was kicked straight into touch and the Harriers were awarded a penalty on the half way line. Without any hesitation Wilcock stepped up kicked Harriers into a 14-2 half time lead.

East came out for the second half with a different attitude and quickly added to their points total with a converted try. 'Scoot' Hayes nipped in to extend the lead, another conversion giving the Harriers some breathing space.

East had other ideas and again closed the gap. Although at this stage it seemed a comeback was on the cards another try from Wilcock took the Harriers even further away.

Two more tries from the East brought them within touching distance at 24-18 but the Harriers defence tightened up and stopped them scoring any more points, late in the game the match was sealed when Carl Ruffley took an excellent pass from Wilcock and scored in the corner giving a final score of 32-18.
