LEIGH Harriers scored two resounding wins to take another giant step toward to promotion in the Northern Track and Field League.

The squad's outstanding series of performances at Robin Park saw the women lead by 90 points, to take victory for the second time, and the men by 54.

Darren Smith started the ball rolling with a 400m hurdles victory in 62.7sec and followed up with a long jump win.

Ian Graham scored a double in the hammer and the B long jump, while winner of the B 800m Alex Urmston just missed smashing the two minute barrier. Thomas Boardman was second in the A event in 2.04.9.

Tom Henders took the 1500m A event in a pb of 4.22.2 with Jimmy Cooke runner-up in the B event.

David Smith had a winning 48.95m throw in the javelin while Mark Pendlebury had seconds in the shot and discus.

John Indricks was runner-up in the B 200m in 25.1sec and John Howarth added valuable points from two tough 3000m steeplechase and 5000m runs in which he finished second.

Joanne Wood and Amanda Fearnley started the points trail for the girls, Joanne finishing second in the 400m hurdles A race and Amanda winning the B race.

Joanne also took top points in the 1500m and was runner-up in the javelin while Amanda was on song in the B 1500m.

Other winners were Kellie Thornton in the 100m hurdles and 200m, Yasmin Foulds in the 400m in a pb 68.6sec and the B triple jump, Kate Smith in the B 100m hurdles and Rebecca Howarth the 800m and B high jump.

Kate Smith triple jumped to a pb of 8m 12 for second and Carla Gregory had runners-up spots in the shot and hammer.

Sprinter Louise Boardman was pipped to second in the 100m and 200m while Vanessa Hichinson and Eileen Castledine were second and third in the 3000m.

The sprint relay squad made up of Emma Bilsbury, Kellie Thornton, Kate Smith and Louise Boardman clocked 53.6sec for second and the 4 x 400m team of Woods, Fearnley, Foulds and Howarth scored an easy victory.

The prospect of division three is a distinct possibility if the team can keep up this standard with two matches to go.
