A FORMER Stacksteads councillor has shed more than three stones to get himself into shape for a marathon challenge.

And father-of-three Dale Connearn says he's now ready to slash his personal best time by eight minutes when he runs the Blackpool Marathon next weekend.

The dramatic weight loss came after Dale gave up alcohol on New Year's Eve in a bid to get fit for his sixth marathon.

His intensive training regime, which regularly sees him running to Rochdale and Burnley, has also helped towards him gaining a slimmer waistline.

Dale, who works at Bacup and Stacksteads Community Partnership, said: "It's been tough and it's cost me a fortune in new clothes but it's all been worth it because I feel I am at my best form ever.

"I am now just nine stones which is an ideal weight for running."

The former postie resigned from Rossendale Council last June after splitting from his wife.

He has since spent his time channelling his energies into fund-raising for local good causes.

At last year's London Marathon, Dale came through the finish line at a noble three hours and eight minutes - although this year he's aiming to get below the three-hour mark.

Dale, 39, of Dale Street, Bacup, has already raised more than £10,000 for local charities in recent years and aims to boost the total yet again with this year's challenge.

This year he is donating the funds to the Aged, Blind & Disabled Centre in Bacup, which is now being run by a trust and Stacksteads Riverside Park Group.

The marathon takes place on Sunday, June 20. Anybody wanting to sponsor Dale can contact him on 01706 601070 or 0773 444 1031.
