A GREEN-FINGERED grandfather is opening up his pride and joy garden to help a cancer appeal fund blossom.

Money raised from an open day at Rod Raines' themed retreat will go to Christie's against Cancer.

Rod has been perfecting his huge garden since he moved into his Leigh Road, Hindley Green, home almost 20 years ago.

Using reclaimed materials such as railway sleepers and even wellingtons he has created a fairy tale haven.

The garden contains around 12 areas based on different themes including an Oriental garden, a farm yard and other surprises.

As a member of the National Gardens Scheme, Mr Raines has opened up his home numerous times to raise money for good causes, but this time he has decided to support the Christie's appeal.

The open day will be on Sunday August 1 from 11am until 5pm and Mr Raines and his wife Marion will be organising raffles, a balloon race and tombola with cake stalls and refreshments. Keen gardeners will also get the chance to purchase cuttings of Mr Raines' plants.

Admission is £1.50, children free.
