LANCASHIRE Police have warned motorists flying the national flag on their cars they could be committing an offence if it obstructs their view or number plate.

Hundreds of motorists have attached the St George cross to car windows to show their support for the England team in the run up to the European Championships in Portugal.

But police have warned fervent fans not to let them get in the way. A spokeswoman for Lancashire Constabulary said: "It is not illegal to fly a flag in the car but motorists could be liable for some kind of road offence if it obstructs their front, rear or side view and also if it covers the vehicle registration plate.

"Motorists need to be careful they are not committing a motoring offence."

Nationally, more than three million flags have been bought as soccer fans look forward to England's match against France on Sunday

Demand has been so high that more have had to be shipped in from China.

Thousands of flags have also been draped from homes and workplaces across the country.
