A MAJOR investigation is continuing into the cause of a blaze which ripped through a historic Bury church at the weekend.
Three men were arrested shortly after the fire caused severe damage to the disused St Paul's Church in Parsonage Street. They have been released on bail until next month pending the completion of police and fire reports.
At the height of Sunday night's fire, police placed a cordon around the church after fears its tower could collapse.
About 40 firefighters tackled the flames and had the fire under control within an hour. Several people had been seen throwing fireworks into the church.
A spokeswoman for Bury Police said: "The investigation into the cause of this fire, by the police and Greater Manchester Fire Service, is still under way."
