GREEN-fingered volunteers made sure that playtimes at St Paul's CE Primary School went with a hop, skip and jump.

About 20 volunteers from Co-operative Financial Services, and two from B&Q, went along to help out at the Porritt Street school.

Their mission was to breathe new life into a grassed area at the back of the school, and paint a mural on the reception playground wall.

A snakes and ladder and hopscotch area were also painted in the schoolyard.

The school was put in touch with the firms by community group Greater Manchester Cares.

Workers from the Co-op raised £1,300 from employees, who took part in fun-runs, dress-down days and other ideas to raise money.

The money was was used to buy plants and flowers, a garden shed, picnic tables and outdoor play equipment.

Headteacher Mr Trevor Croasdale said: "We've really managed to smarten up the school grounds and it has made such a difference already. The children have all this new play equipment but they also have a whole new environment to play in."
