POLICE who raided a man's Burnley home found almost 100 cannabis plants growing, a court was told.

Burnley magistrates heard how 94 plants were seized by officers, as well as lights, booklets, fertiliser and plant food.

Wayne Bannister admitted to police they were his plants and he had grown them from seeds he got from a friend.

Bannister, whose solicitor told the bench the defendant had got a "little book" on how to grow cannabis from Burnley town centre, pleaded guilty to cultivating the drug.

The defendant, 24, of Cog Lane, who is on benefits, was given a six-month community rehabilitation order and told to pay £50 costs.

Andy Robinson, prosecuting, told the court there was a "small degree of sophistication" in the plant growing. When Bannister was questioned, he said he used to smoke cannabis with his ex-girlfriend. Mark Williams, defending, said Bannister had hoped to be able to grow some cannabis to smoke, but none of the plants had reached the stage of production where there was any sort of yield.
