IT was one BIG family affair when former headteacher Eric Wilson celebrated his retirement from the bench at Bury Magistrates Court.

Mr Wilson, from Whitefield, held a party at Stand Golf Club, where he is a member, supported by his five children and 14 grandchildren.

Mr Wilson had served on the bench for more than 20 years and it was only because he celebrated his 70th birthday a few days before that he retired from his role as a JP.

His wife Muriel said: "Eric really enjoyed his work for Bury Magistrates and now needs something just as stimulating to replace it. He only retired because he reached 70, so we had a joint celebration for family and friends."

Mr Wilson, who was the longest serving headteacher in Manchester when he retired from King David Junior School two years ago, declined birthday and retirement gifts.

Instead, he requested donations to Bury Hospice.
