GRANDAD Mike Heath is hoping to get local businesses tee'd up for a day of golf in aid of the hospital which saved his life.

Engineering consultant Mike, who lives in Swinton Crescent, Unsworth, wants to thank Fairfield General Hospital for helping him beat cancer by organising a fund-raising tournament.

The father of two, who also has two grandchildren, was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma last year and underwent eight months of chemotherapy at the hospital.

Now in remission, keen golfer Mike is arranging the day at Worsley Golf Club on July 7, to raise funds for the day case unit which sees a wide range of patients, including those requiring chemotherapy.

Mike (65), who in the 1960s played for Stockport County Football Club, said: "They're a wonderful team at Fairfield and I just can't praise them enough. I'm in remission and feeling fantastic. I wanted to do something to thank them for their help.

"I'm a very keen golfer, and a member at Worsley, and this seemed like a great way to give something back, while helping other patients going through chemotherapy in the future."

Mike has written to various businesses, asking them to consider sponsoring prizes for the event such as the longest drive, nearest the pin at the par three holes. They are also invited to enter teams in the competition.

The entry fee for the teams of four is £200 and there are more than £1,000 worth of prizes to be won.

Mike added: "Hospital staff work as teams, and businesses also rely on teamwork, so again, this is very appropriate. I hope that as many businesses as possible support the day, whether by sponsoring prizes or by entering teams.

"It's a great team-building opportunity or corporate event, and will be a fantastic day for everyone.

"For £50 a head, they will get use of the course and a three-course meal with wine and also a chance of prizes. It really is a great deal and helping such a good cause.

"A thank-you also has to go to the golf club which is waiving the green fees and providing food at cost."

Sister Bev Sedman, day case unit manager at Fairfield, said: "It is always nice when somebody shows their appreciation for all the hard work from the dedicated staff on the unit. The money raised will benefit other patients undergoing treatment on the unit."
