FINANCIAL constraints are delaying Steve Cotterill's first foray into the summer transfer market.

The new Burnley boss completed his first week in the job still looking to boost his squad numbers from the eight contract players he inherited when he was appointed.

But Cotterill is happy to play the waiting game and is confident of getting the men he wants, despite not being able to set a target as to when he will land his first signing.

"It's the £64 million dollar question," said Cotterill. "There's not a lot happening in the transfer market unless you've got money.

"If you've got money you can go and sign people quite easily, it's easier than it is if you haven't got any, because it's tight. But we've got to look down all avenues."

The process of bringing in potential new players, some of whom Cotterill has been speaking to this week, is also being held back by other tasks the new manager has to do to as he settles into the new role.

The 39-year-old admitted to a manic first weekend immediately after taking over the hot seat last Thursday and things haven't slowed down since.

"It wasn't just a mad weekend, it's been a mad week and I've done three days' work in two days," said Cotterill.

"When you come in there's a lot of balls to pick up and throw in the air. At the moment there's a lot of them and I'm waiting for them to come back down.

"Whether it's offices and dressing rooms needing painting, looking at the training ground, setting a pre-season tour and friendlies, you have to do it."

Success on this front has come in the shape of a confirmed pre-season friendly with Everton.

Cotterill said: "We didn't get lucky with contacting the other Premiership sides in the area but we got lucky with that one.

"It's very hard when you start in the first week of June to get pre-season friendlies so I'm surprised we've managed to get Everton."
