"HEY big spender" may not quite be the right anthem for Radcliffe Borough next season, but the ambitious club will certainly have spent more money on players for the forthcoming season than in previous campaigns.

"We've upped the wage bill a bit this summer, nothing dramatic but I believe enough to get some players we could not have afforded previously," said Boro boss Kevin Glendon.

"So it's fair play to the chairman, he's done that and I'm sure the fans will appreciate that we are trying our best to give them the success they deserve.

His latest signing is 23-year-old winger Andy Heald who joins Boro from Conference North-bound Stalybridge Celtic.

Long-serving Boro full-back Tony Whealing travels in the opposite direction, with Boro also receiving a nominal fee.

However, Heald's signing excites him: "Andy is only 23 and a more attacking player than Tony," said Glendon. "He has played in the Conference for Leigh RMI and Morecambe and his attacking flair will suit our style of play.

"I've been absolutely delighted with the signing of Phil Denney, Gordon Armstrong and Heald, and I'm still trying to get another striker, midfielder - I'm still waiting to hear from John Coleman - and possibly another centre-back."

Indeed Armstrong's signing will be instrumental in the formation Glendon is considering for the new season.

"I'm going to play five at the back, three in midfield and two up front," he explained.

"We've always played better when we play with that formation, we changed a few times last season and it didn't work out.

"I'm aiming for a very strong 14-man squad and then hopefully extend that to 16 or even 18. We'll just have to see how it goes."
