A HYNDBURN magistrate and a victim support volunteer from Chorley are among those to be honoured in the Queen's Birthday Honours List.

Bernard Holden, a Hyndburn magistrate since 1983, has been made an MBE for his services to the community in Accrington.

He is chairman of the Hyndburn licensing and betting committee, vice-chairman of the bench training and development committee, chairman of Hyndburn Homewise, and chairman of the governors at St Anne's and St Joseph's RC primary school

He is also chairman of the construction and advisory committee at Accrington and Rossendale College, a chairman and director of Hyndburn First and a board member of Elevate, the housing market renewal pathfinder. On top of that he also finds time to be a member of the children's centre locality group, a Eucharistic minister at St Anne's RC Church as well as many other community roles.

Bernard, 69, of Queen Elizabeth Crescent, Accrington, said: "It's quite an honour but also a little intimidating as I don't know quite how to respond. I look at some of the people I have helped, disabled people for example, and think they deserve it more than me."

Bernard's proud wife, Jean, said: "This award came completely out of the blue for Bernard. He would never consider himself worthy of any honour and regards many of his achievements as ordinary, everyday events. His main qualities are his dedication, his integrity and his total lack of ego."

Therese Roe, of Chorley, has been made an MBE for services to victims of crime in Lancashire. Therese is a volunteer at Chorley Victim Support.
