I FIND it hard to credit Mr Sadler's (LET, July 1) deduction that, arising from an increase in deaths of two per cent in areas where speed cameras are in profusion, the cameras are a "one trick pony" and virtually ineffective.

My conclusion is that, sadly, there are far too many drivers who are confident that they can drive safely at any speed and strongly object to anyone dictating where and when speeds should be modified.

Traffic on the roads could be reduced if more severe penalties were introduced for motoring offences, in particular those for failure to pay road tax and lack of insurance cover, all too often combined.

Financial penalties are useless and I feel that the cars should be impounded and sold to cover the fines and costs.
