A TOTAL of 35 roads in Padiham will have a 20mph speed limit introduced on them after residents complained about speeding cars.

The work carried out by Lancashire County Council will see the limit imposed on roads around Stockbridge Road, Abingdon Road, Victoria Road and Dryden Street.

Speed humps will be installed in and around Victoria Road and Dryden Street, and to comply with Government legislation regulating the 20mph limit, another three speed humps will be installed in and around Stockbridge Road and Abingdon Road.

Kelly Royle, engineering technician for Burnley Council, overseeing the £30,000 project, said it is hoped work will begin in September.

"The reason for this work is because residents have written into us complaining about speeding traffic," she said. "We passed this on to Lancashire County Council, who looked at the accidents in the area and decided to carry out the work."

In January 83-year-old Parker Ince was hit by a car and killed when walking his dog near to his home in Dryden Street.

And today councillors and residents welcomed the introduction of the measures aimed to reduce such incidents.

Coun Bob Clark said residents have contacted him with their concerns about speeding cars. He said: "Speeding kills and if this helps to save a life it is surely a good thing.

Anjam Akram, owner of V and I Pickard Newsagents, in Dryden Street, welcomed the proposals.

He said: "I think it will make the area safer. There has been a lot of accidents on the road and there is a big problem with cars speeding."

Dryden Street resident Debra Shirtcliffe, 37, said she did not let her children cross the road because it is too dangerous.

The mother of two said: "I do not mind the 20mph limit. Most people have two cars and in the evening the road is full of cars and it is dangerous to cross."
