A DISPLAY of work tracing the history of Akzo Nobel, Darwen, is to be launched.

St Joseph's RC Primary School pupils have been finding out about how the company works and how it has changed over the years as part of the heritage lottery-funded project, The Past on Your Doorstep - The Future in Your Hands.

They have been working with staff from Groundwork Blackburn to look at the heritage of the town focusing on Akzo Nobel, which produces Crown paints and which has had roots in Darwen since 1839.

Children at the school have looked at aspects of the business and influencing factors including the weather, town planning, the environmental impact, the history of paint, room design and the employment policy of the company.

An open day will be held at the school on Thursday, between 9.15am and 11am.

Groundwork has also built a Crown memorial garden to celebrate the past 100 years of paint in Darwen. The Mayor of Blackburn with Darwen, Coun David Foster, will officially open the garden.
