AN ACCRINGTON historian has welcomed the town's first lasting tribute to the Accrington pals.
Bill Turner, who has conducted much of the research into the regiment, says the memorial, unveiled on Sunday, is important because it will help younger generations to remember the sacrifices made.
The regiment was almost wiped out at the Battle of the Somme during the first world war 88 years ago.
Mr Turner said: "I am delighted it is in a prominent location because people will have to pass it every day.
"It is particularly important for the younger generations, and will help keep the memory of the pals alive for generations to come."
The memorial has also been heralded by Hyndburn Council leader Peter Britcliffe who hopes the garden surrounding the sand-coloured stone, next to the entrance of St James Church, Church Street can be redeveloped so that remembrance ceremonies can be held there in future.
