TODDLERS are in for a tumble with their school being given the go-ahead for a £15,000 new outdoor play facility.

The Early Years play area at Great Harwood's Our Lady and St Hubert's RC Primary School will be built this summer after Lancashire County Council helped the school secure extra funding. Now parents and staff are celebrating the success with their own mini-Olympic event today .

Head teacher Anthony O'Neill said: "I am very pleased with this investment for the school. It is a cash boost that we would never have otherwise managed to raise.

"The effort that has been put in to ensure our success has been tremendous.

"We are even taking on an extra nursery nurse for more hours to make sure children can maximise its use."

There are 24 children who will directly benefit in Early Years but there are also other projects now on the go at the school to extend the play area, including soft tarmac and wooden balance obstacles for the older children.

The funds have been raised from the national Awards for All programme, Lancashire's Environmental Fund and a county council small site reclamation grant.

The chairman of governors, Eileen Hayes, said: "The outdoor secure play area will include climbing frames and sand play.

"It has been a great year for us in terms of fundraising and we really wanted to celebrate.

"The school has also enjoyed a great year academically with 100 per cent attainment at Maths and Science in Key Stage exams."

The mini-Olympics, at which children will be wearing colours associated with certain countries, will be held on Wednesday at 6.30pm.

Parents are putting on a barbecue and party.
