A GROUP of NHS workers in Darwen were due to find out today whether they had won one of the health industry's top awards.

The 12 staff were shortlisted for the NHS Health and Social Care Awards 2004 after developing a project aimed at improving the quality of life for elderly people in the town.

They won the Queen Mother's Award for care to elderly people in the regional final of the awards and were due to attend the glittering national finals ceremony in London's Docklands today.

Victory would earn them £15,000 towards further developing the pro-active lifestyles project in Darwen.

The project, launched last year and piloted in Darwen, is a community-based programme to keep elderly people fit and healthy using various activities from basic mobility exercises through to cycling and adventure holidays.

The scheme was co-ordinated by a mixed team including physiotherapists, staff from Birch Hall Care Centre, the Primary Care Trust, Blackburn with Darwen Council's leisure services department and ambulance staff.
