A BRIGHT carnival weaved its way through the streets of Bastwell to mark the a celebration of African culture.

Pupils at Cedars Infant School, in Hawthorn Street, organised a week of events after setting up a unique link with a Gambian school.

The school has been celebrating music and culture from the region after welcoming back teachers who went there as part of the Teachers International Professional Development scheme. Now pupils are enjoying a rare link with an early years school in the area.

Head teacher Liz Beaumont said: "The Gambia gang have taught the pupils so much about a different culture we wanted to celebrate.

"The link is very unusual as there are so few schools for this young age group over there."

The visiting group included Frances Neale, 54, Anne Davies, 52, Rachel Furness, 29 and Anna O'Grady, 30, as well as nursery nurse Saima Shah, 24.
