A NEW £750,000 children's centre for families in Preston was unveiled by a special guest last week.

Six-year-old Ceri Fisher was treated like a princess for a day after designing the winning logo for the Sure Start Preston West Children's Centre, at the Ashton Primary School site.

A flashy stretch limo brought the youngster to the Ainsdale Drive centre on Saturday where she was invited to cut the ribbon on the new building.

More than 100 people turned up to the opening including the city's Mayor, Councillor Pat Woods, and her consort/husband Alan.

The centre has been designed for families living in the Larches, Savick, Ingol and Tanterton areas, with children aged 0-4 years.

It has indoor and outdoor play areas for the children and counsellors, health visitors and midwives on site. A sensory room, known as the fun factory, will be used to help children with speech and language delay problems.

The centre offers early education for young children, health services, family support and a base for childminders, which helps unemployed parents return to work.

Health and social team leader for the centre, Sally Nightingale, said it was a 'one stop shop' for families in Preston.

Guests at the event could take part in glass painting, Indian head massage and a number of competitions. There was also a show by a children's entertainer.
