LEIGH RMI's New Year's Day clash at Northwich Victoria was called off after the torrential rain which flooded the North-west made the pitch unplayable.

As RMI were winning 2-1 at the time it was probably the last decision they wanted.

PREVIEW: RMI look for New Year cheer

LEIGH RMI hope a new year will bring a new lease of life for the ailing club and help ease manager Geoff Lutley's worries.

What better way to kick-start a disastrous season, which has brought them just one win, than with three points at fellow-strugglers Northwich Victoria on Saturday.

Manager Geoff Lutley admits that the lack of cash at his disposal has left him frustrated.

His side have picked up just one point since he took charge seven games ago and the lack of quality players is causing him concern.

"It is very difficult for us to survive at this level with the players I have," he said. "I need to have a fighting chance and that means some cash to bring in better players.

"It is very frustrating for me. I am preparing the players as professionally as I can but some of them are not good enough."

Lutley hopes his latest signing, Michael Reed will make an impact if he returns from holiday in time to make his debut.

The 19-year-old striker, who was released by Carlisle in the summer after an injury-plagued three years, signalled his return to form following six months on the sidelines by hitting eight goals, including two hat-tricks, for Penrith after joining them last month.

Lutley said: "He has been scoring plenty of goals for Penrith and has turned down a couple of offers from Scottish clubs to join us, so I am hopeful he will make a difference.

"I am looking for a top performance against Northwich Victoria and if we can get a win it will be the perfect start to the New Year."
