THE new year got off to a hectic start in East Lancashire, with dozens of people spending their first day of 2005 in the police cells.

Police in Eastern Division, covering Blackburn, Darwen, Hyndburn and Ribble Valley, arrested 50 people for drinking too much and causing trouble in the town centre, as well as domestic incidents.

Sergeant Steve Haworth said: "Unfortunately we had a lot of people arrested for being drunk and disorderly in the town centre and other areas, as well as people with domestic issues, to the extent we filled up the cells overnight.

"It was a very busy night although there were no major incidents and we are still trying to deal with things because of the sheer numbers of people that have been arrested."

Police in the Penning Division -- covering Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale -- also said there had been many incidents of people being arrested for drink-related incidents and said at this stage they were still too busy to put a figure on the number of people detained in the cells.
