A RESCUE operation was carried out when a woman fractured her ankle while walking on the moors at Rivington.

The 57-year-old woman, believed to be from the Leigh area, was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital on Sunday night after being carried to safety by rescuers.

Rescue workers were called to the incident at just after 7pm near Top Barn, in Lever Park.

The walkers had made contact with Bolton Mountain Rescue on a mobile telephone to ask for help.

The woman had been out walking with her partner and dog when the accident happened.
