PUPILS and staff at an Accrington school have raised £2,500 for victims of the tsunami in Asia.

Headteacher Alastair Coates asked pupils to think about how much they could donate to the disaster fund.

He said: "They were asked to think about what they had spent on themselves in the past week, what they had received for Christmas and what they might earn if they had a job.

"They were asked to think about how they would go and buy a CD and spend perhaps £10."

Mr Coates said: "After some time of preparation pupils and staff gave a magnificent £2,500 on one day.

"The school is grateful to staff, pupils and parents for the splendid and often sacrificial giving that enabled this money to be raised in such a good cause."

Most of the money will go through Christian Aid to assist the relief effort.

But a sum of £1,000 was specifically given to a registered local Christian charity to cover the transport costs of a container carrying £100,000-worth of equipment and medicines to the disaster area.

Mr Coates said the container of items donated by Lancashire residents was waiting in Much Hoole waiting to be dispatched and the school's donation meant it was sent out straight away.
