PENDLE Council leader Alan Davies has added his name to the list of people to get a fine from new parking wardens.

And the Mayor of Pendle Coun Dorothy Lord says the wardens have a bad attitude.

Councillors are also worried that the new wardens are giving the authority a bad name and are annoyed that Lancashire County Council is sending out letters headed with a giant version of Pendle Borough Council's logo.

Coun Davies said: "When police and proper traffic wardens were doing it, they worked a particular area and knew what was happening on the ground.

"These ones don't use their heads as much as we'd like them to.

"Pendle Council staff would not be allowed to send out a letter with a logo that size on it and there is no reason why another organisation working with this council should be allowed to

do it."

Coun Lord added: "I've had one or two letters about the attitude of the wardens and then I had a similar experience in Nelson with my son who pulled up and asked one of these people how long he could park.

"The man just pointed to the sign as if to say, 'The sign's there, read it' and I realised the letters were right."

Nelson Councillor Mahboob Ahmed has also been fined by the wardens and wants them to have more training.

Councillors fear the wardens' zero tolerance attitude is putting people off shopping in Pendle.

Waterside's Coun Tony Greaves said: "It is brassing off a lot of people and people are being discouraged from shopping in our town centre.

"People are getting a £30 to £60 fine for being a few minutes late or being three or four inches over the edge of the parking area.

"These rules and regulations ought to be imposed in a slightly more sensible, user-friendly way."

But Vivary Bridge's Coun David Whalley stuck up for the new wardens and said they had to stick to the rules or everyone would make excuses.

He said: "It's a very difficult job and the only way they can make it work is to do it by the book.

"If we started saying they should give way on certain things, everyone would have a reason not to pay."
