A VAN overturned and two cars collided in separate incidents on the M65 as snow covered much of East Lancashire today.

The van came to a halt at about 7.30am, close to junction six on the eastbound carriageway at Whitebirk. Fire crews were called to help secure the vehicle.

About half an hour later, two cars collided near junction eight of the eastbound carriageway, at the A56.

One car spun into a field and the other into the central barrier. Fire crews were called back to the same stretch of road to rescue a trapped passenger.

The Met Office, who issued weather warnings across the county for motorists to take extra caution, said snow had fallen on roads and turned icy as temperatures dropped below freezing.

More snow was not ruled out but in many areas it was expected to be sleety on lower ground.

Tomorrow is expected to be a much milder day with temperatures reaching 10 degrees. Remaining snow is expected to thaw.
