JOHN Coleman would be forgiven for feeling he's gone back to the classroom.

For the phrase 'must do better' will no doubt be at the heart of the Accrington Stanley manager's pre-match pep-talk tonight.

Coleman was frustrated that his side couldn't dispose of Conference rivals Hereford United in the FA Trophy third round at the first time of asking, especially with a lacklustre display in attack.

But the Reds boss hopes his side won't be making the same mistakes tonight when they travel to Edgar Street for the replay (kick-off 7.45pm).

"If you'd have been a goal down you'd have wanted the draw so, at the end of the day, we didn't lose," said Coleman after Saturday's dull stalemate.

"We're still unbeaten this year and we've kept a clean sheet.

"We'd have sooner tried to win it at home obviously, but I don't think there was a shot on target on Saturday.

"We'd expect to do more at home but no-one seemed to provide the spark further up the field and I think both teams cancelled each other out.

"But we don't go too many games where we don't create many chances, so I'd like to think that's a one-off and we'd be back to what we do best in front of their goal.

"It might be a different game (tonight) because the onus will be on them to come out more and that might exploit a bit of space for us."

But Coleman knows it will take massive improvements throughout the side for Stanley to be able to do that.

"I thought we looked quite bright in the first half but then the game petered out into a non-event in the second half," he said.

"I thought Lee McEvilly was our star player and showed a great appetite for the game.

"He showed a lot of desire and maybe things didn't break for him.

"But we need to be a little bit more positive in and around their box. Rory (Prendergast) wasn't firing on Saturday. We didn't get him on the ball often but, when we did, he didn't seem to do much with it.

"And with him being one of your main threats it's a bit disappointing."

He added: "We said at half-time that we had to step on the gas a bit and show a little bit more inventiveness in and around their area.

"We had to be a little bit more positive and take the game to them and try to win. Maybe be a little bit more hungry to get on the ball and retain possession.

"I think there was a little bit of an improvement in the second half but you really couldn't see where a goal was going to come from for either team."

Central defender Jonathan Smith is available for selection after serving a three-match ban.
