GRASSROOTS community initiatives in the Radcliffe area are being urged to take advantage of a new source of funding.

The Community Foundation for Greater Manchester has a pot of money waiting to benefit groups and clubs in the borough.

Last year, three borough projects were awarded grants after they applied for financial help:

Streetwise 2000, Bury, received £1,966 to purchase a photocopier and cover the costs of printing and posting a newsletter.

The group provides a range of services and activities to vulnerable young people (primarily 16 to 19-year-olds) who are suffering from a variety of health and social issues, which result in their isolation. The award was made in conjunction with the Oglesby Charitable Trust Fund.

Elderly group "Young At Heart", based at the Elms Community Centre, Whitefield, also benefited to the tune of £1,876 They meet regularly to take part in activities such as painting, flower arranging, pottery, IT skills, bingo and trips out, and were setting up a luncheon club so they could meet up to three times a week.

The grant allowed them to purchase various kitchen appliances and a painting tutor.

Ellen's Court Tenants Group in Radcliffe, offers supported accommodation to young mothers (with children up to 5 years old) who are homeless and who may often have drug or alcohol-related issues. It received £2,000 to purchase toys for a new creche which will allow both mothers and children to learn and develop their social skills.

Organisations invited to apply for a grant include:

l Small, community based and locally-led groups

l Groups/projects from disadvantaged communities or individuals who might be suffering from isolation, discrimination or social disadvantage

l Those with minimal cash reserves and limited access to funding support

l Groups that do not duplicate an existing provision or service

The Community Foundation is a grant-making, non-profit organisation which raises money from private and public sectors and channels the funding down to grassroots community groups, particularly in disadvantaged areas.
