DISABLED people and pensioners in Prestwich and Whitefield are being urged to sign up to a scheme which offers free gas safety checks, emergency heating during power cuts, and protection against bogus callers.

Bury District Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) is supporting a campaign by the independent gas and electricity watchdog Energywatch to make people with special needs aware of such services.

The free scheme can be taken up by people who are disabled or chronically sick, those of pensionable age, and anyone with a visual or hearing impairment.

Mr Dave Bevitt, CAB district manager, said: "We see a lot of pensioners and disabled people who have no idea they are entitled to these special services provided by all gas and electricity suppliers. "
