Probe as goalie hit by missile at Burnley game

WIGAN Athletic bosses are investigating after a missile thrown from the Burnley supporters’ area struck goalkeeper Chris Kirkland.

Referee Mike Jones halted the game at the DW Stadium in the 53rd minute for Kirkland to receive treatment.

Kirkland, with his back towards the Burnley fans amassed behind his goal, was initially seen rubbing the top of his head.

Wearing a pained expression, Kirkland’s gaze was then directed to the Clarets supporters as he attempted to seek out the perpetrator.

Kirkland was found to be uninjured and able to continue, producing a vital save in the dying stages moments prior to Hugo Rodallega heading home a last-gasp winner.

Wigan chiefs are looking into whether the incident was caught on CCTV.

Wigan boss Roberto Martinez said: “We’re trying to find out what happened.

“We think it was a coin.

“We’re not too sure about it, but it’s one of those events you don’t want to see on a football pitch.

“I was relieved and pleased Chris carried on in the game because can you imagine if he’d been carried off because someone threw a coin.

“What occurred is something the authorities need to look into, and something we don’t want to see on a football pitch.

“It shouldn’t be in modern football.”

Burnley boss Brian Laws said he did not see what happened.

He said: “I asked what the problem was and the referee said there was something thrown from that area.

“I don’t know what it was.

“I’d rather talk about the performance than anything else and that’s what I’m going to concentrate on.”

Last season Chelsea striker Didier Drogba received a police caution for throwing a coin back to Burnley fans during the Carling Cup fourth road at Stamford Bridge.

There are always one or two idiots to spoil the reputation of the club and tarnish the reputation of the genuine Burnley Fans.
Who ever it was its time to grow up, get out of your short trausers and act like a decent adult.
If you want to act like an animal and harm others dont hide behind 3000 people. Be brave and step forward and confront someone face to face if you have a gripe.
Better still why dont they enlist into the Army and join the infantry. They can pop over to Afganistan then and have fun. Oh something tells me they are not that brave after all more like COWARDS i think.
Because i can tell you first hand that one its not fun, two they dont have the balls and three they would be crying home to mummy or finally, end up DEAD.
So those who were involved in the missile throwing, think again before you throw your pocket money away.

Hiya Bertiebee - good comments - no place for that.
.
Pressure is on now though - not looking good for a derby next season?
Would love to have the derby again but as regards helping you out well - you know the answer to that one!
.
How ironic Moses set up Wigan's winner? Roll on Sunday.

Cheers Morst, thought i may have been asking a little too much with wanting 3 points lol.
Ironic to that the defence parted just like the red sea to allow Rodallega a free passage to goal lmao.
All the best Morst. UTC

Happened at Chelsea last season too, when Drogba was struck.
.
Hope the people say alongside the idiots grass them up (which i doubt will happen).
.
Your fans have not got the best rep. with stupid gits like that idiot Harry Potter (or whatever he is called) not helping.
.
All decent Burnley supporters (is that an oxymoron?) will, no doubt, condemn this numpty. If they repeat it next weekend, there will be grief.

Andy a very good point, and how long before a player loses an eye or something worse.

According to the Times it was a coin thrown. Any truth in the reports Kilby was seen after the game scrabbling around on the pitch trying to find it?.

And please stop wasting taxpayers money in this way - know what i mean;-)

Yes very stupid almost infantile.

Maybe it was a member of the Burnley Baby Squad!!!!!!

Could even lead to points being deducted and that will surely kill off any chances of survival

Security word "play-time", how apt!!!

Bring on the big game

31 years and counting

quite bizarre ???we have no missile to show .The goalie had no injury ??we have no culprit;so where is the crime ?all we have is a bit of histrionics from a goalie weird.

wise words bertie, idiots like that think its funny hurting people because things are'nt going their way, if i threw a coin on the pitch everytime i was'nt happy with the way the game was going i'd be a poor man. 5 days to go fellas.

Now then, it so happens that I, as a neutral fan, was at Saturday's match at Wigan, sat way up high in what they call, I think, The East Stand, together with a Spanish visitor who I'd invited along to come and watch a Premier League match.
We had the Burnley fans over to our right.
Also over to our right, in the same stand as us but at the par nearer the Burnley end, there was a large group of rowdy Wigan fans who, throughout the match, were hurling abuse - and at times objects - at the Burnley supporters.
Now then, is it not possible that an object thrown by them could have wheeled away (remember there was quite a strong wind) towards Kirkland and struck him on the head? Bear in mind, also, that many of these rowdy Wigan fans had been drinking heavily during half-time, which would have negatively affected their aim.
In fact, the more I think about it the more probable it seems that the object came from one of Wigan's own fans. Almost definitely, in fact.

Then why was Kilby seen after the game on all fours on the pitch trying to find the coin?
