East Lancashire homeowners hiring out their driveways

A NEW website may have the answer to East Lancashire's parking problems — putting drivers in touch with homeowners who want to hire out their drive.

IT consultant Tristan Carter, 33, who lives in Taylor Avenue near Ewood Park, Blackburn, has advertised his two-space drive on the website parkatmyhouse.co.uk since October for fans to use on Rovers matchdays.

He said he had seen a steady stream of customers paying £5 a time.

"I was getting one or two virtually every match," he said.

"I think people feel safer keeping their car on a residential drive.

"I've earned about £50 so far. It's not costing anything for me to run it. It's effectively free money, isn't it?"

The website is also useful for parking in other cities.

Sales manager at Blackburn Audi, Brian Ditchfield, paid £15 to park his car at Wembley, just over half the cost of the stadium car park.

"Every time I've used it it's been really good," said 44-year-old Brian.

"It's a hassle-free tool and if you use it you don't have to drive round looking for a parking space.

"I parked up and then two minutes later I was in the ground."

Anthony Eskinazi, founder of parkatmyhouse.co.uk, said: "Parking in many of our cities, especially near hospitals, airports or football stadiums is often scarce and expensive.

"By renting a private driveway customers are able to secure a convenient and affordable place to park, often at up to 70 per cent less than using traditional car parks."

The website is free to use for people who want to hire a drive. People who rent out their drive pay 15 per cent of whatever they receive to parkatmyhouse.

I think this is a brilliant idea and hope it catches on.

Not now that HMRC have read this,

and you find BWDBC knocking on your door as you effectively are using a private address for business use!!!!!!!

Well, yes indeed, any payment ought to be declared for income tax purposes and effectively using part of your main residence as a business may undermine any Private Residence Relief if you ever come to sell (possibly leading to a hefty Capital Gains Tax bill).
.
Also, with their wide ranging powers, HMRC may well be able to access the agent's data-base and obtain client's details.

Don't be so ridiculously petty and PC, the blokes cousin could give him a fiver to park on match days, my pensioner sister gives hers away for free, i've told her to charge, but she refuses because of the likes of you lot!
Tristan...chuck a bucket of water over the cars, then you can say they paid for water, which the tax man can't touch, because you have to pay for it!
C'mon you straigh-forward Northerners, give up your drives for 3 hours and make our roads a safer place!
By the way...I have been a member of Parkatmyhouse for about 4 years and only had one enquiry and that was for a 'permanent' caravan...£3.00 per day...500 yards from solicitor land...you must be joking!

It does sound like a good idea. What happens if the car is damaged whilst on your driveway. Who will pay for the damage.

You are effectively opening up a business! So you need public liability insurance (imagine if the owner or passenger slipped on the wet or ice on your drive for a service they are paying for!), Council Tax increase because you will have to pay business rates on a proportion of your property, insurance against accidental damage (imagine if the car got damaged), you'll have to register as self employed and pay self employed National Insurance conts and so on . . . mmm I guess it's ok until the tax man/council catches up with or something happens (i.e. damage occurs or the car gets stolen). I guess you need to way up the risks of these things happening - it might be years down the line and you think great I've mad a few hundred quid - then wallop you are sued by the cars owner for damage or face a hefty tax bill/fine or whatever. It only takes an employee of HRMC to use the facility on offer or a local council employee and hey presto! (You probably wouldn’t know if they did or not) The odd time will probably be OK – but if becomes a regular income week in week out that’s a different scenario! If you’re happy making hay whilst the sun shines . . . go for it!

I can see this kind of venture maybe being worthwhile down south, especially London itself, but Ewood isn't exactly Mayfair!
