IMPROVEMENTS to Bolton’s regional rail network could create 23,000 jobs, according to a new report.

Proposed work on the network’s northern hub, which includes Bolton, could also bring £2.1 billion to the economy by 2021, according to research commissioned by the Greater Manchester Integrated Transport Authority and carried out by accounting firm KPMG.

Network Rail’s northern hub report aims to reduce congestion and improve infrastructure on the north’s rail network.

Network Rail route director Jo Kaye said: “With 700 more trains every day carrying 3.5 million more passengers a year, the northern hub will transform rail travel across the north.”
