Kwik Save sale could help regenerate Burnley area

BURNLEY Council is marketing a former Kwik Save store in a bid to regenerate one of the town’s most deprived areas.

The Accrington Road site has been empty for more than two years and has become a magnet for yobs.

Three property developers have now come forward to express ‘serious’ interest in purchasing the site.

It was bought by the council last month as part of a regeneration scheme to improve the run-down Accrington Road ‘corridor’.

The site was placed on the council’s ‘hall of shame’ hitlist by council bosses last month due.

Coun Lynne Briggs, who represents the Rosegrove with Lowerhouse ward, said: “It is very good news for the area and it will hopefully result in a decline in anti-social behaviour.

“I am not sure of the developer’s intentions for the building but we all hope they improve the property which would have a positive effect on the whole area.

“Anything that brightens up a derelict property is always good news and this is news which I welcome.”

The site is close to the brewery Moorhouses, which is currently under-going a £4m makeover.

A council spokesman said: “We are unable to go into details regarding the three parties but we have received three serious expressions of interest.

“Burnley Council is now pursuing each one of them to see which proposal is most suitable.”

Nolan Redshaw, specialist commer-cial property consultancy, is overseeing the sale.

Nobody from the firm was available for comment yesterday.

You don't have yobs in the Ribble Valley, do you, Davidoff? Gosh, "No!".

Again another piece of Election hype which is aimed at getting votes. What's the sudden interest? How come the 3 companies were not interested in the land before?

Is the interest because Liberal Gordon is going to lease it out for a 'peppercorn rent'? Bet they don't pay market price!

These businesses are just sitting back and waiting for Gordon to buy up the land at above the market price and then lease the land off at cheap rates. Yet again Grodon's showing his lack of business acumen and heading to bankrupt a Burnley.

Merlin I think the issue here for me is that yet again in Burnley another example of high above the market price being paid for land and property in the area with no real thought into long term strategy for the area. Buying buildings like the Mitre and yet no thoughts about what they are actually going to do with it. No wonder people are getting fed up as they want to see something happening which is permanent and not just a business which is only going to be there for a few years.
