Women-only Nelson gym builds up to 140 members

A MOTHER-of-four who set up a gym to help women lose weight is celebrating after signing up more than 140 members.
When Sobia Nawaz set up the women-only Slimntone Gym in Nelson, her motivation was not money-related.
But the facility at Silverman Hall is proving to be a hit with local women who would not normally go to fitness classes.
She said: “My aim was not make it into a business but to target deprived areas.
“There are serious health issues within the community.
“While many of my members are born here, it is refreshing to see women who are from Pakistan coming to the gym wanting to learn more.”
“They all just want to lose weight like anyone else. We even have a 79-year-old woman who now regulary attends the gym. It is really inspiring.
“The gym has some good equipment in it to help with weight loss and blood circulation.”
Sobia said she had been taken aback by the amount of support from the com-munity and now she hoped to attract even more mem-bers.
She added: “So far it has proved very popular and I am hoping more women will join up.
“There is plenty of health advice available for women of all ages.
“We have over 140 members and the gym is strictly for women only.
“It has become a safe environment for women to get fit and learn more about how to stay healthy.
“We have a personal training service to keep them motivated.”
Sobia runs the gym as well as taking care of her four young children.
She said: “I don’t how I manage it sometimes but taking care of the kids and running the gym can be quite tiring.
“But I’m enjoying it and I get help in terms of advice from my husband who works for Pendle Leisure.
“He does help me out in certain areas. He encouraged me to go along with it.”
The gym is open from 5pm to 8pm Monday to Thursday and 9am to 3pm on Fridays.
