New hope for Burnley Weavers' Triangle plan

More stories about: Weavers' Triangle

BURNLEY’S flagship £250million Weavers’ Triangle scheme remains torpedoed by the effects of the recession - but bosses expect progress “within months”.

Regeneration leaders have spent millions making buildings safe in the historical area of the town and now need to appoint developers.

It is envisaged that the triangle, which was once the heart of thriving industrial Burnley, will be transformed into flats, offices, shops, restaurants, and a public square.

Council bosses shelved the Weavers’ Triangle ‘masterplan’ in 2008 due to the recession but say progress could now be made this summer.

Martin Smith, Burnley Council’s regeneration executive member, said: “We have been working to make the area safe and we are hoping that progress will be made with development soon.

“We have not got a strict timescale, we are just waiting to speak to people who show an interest.

“I would have preferred it not to have taken so long but hopefully we will be able to get developers on board in the next few months.”

Coun Smith’s pledge comes as St Modwen, the owner of Weavers’ Triangle buildings in the Finsley Gate area, applied for an extension to its outline planning permission for flats and offices.

Permission was granted in 2007 but a fresh bid has had to be made as it was due to expire because no building work has taken place.

Last year, Burnley Council spent £5million of North West Development Agency money buying up sites in the Westgate and Trafalgar Street area of the town.

Yes this is just election hype for Gordon Birtwistle. Reality is that nothing will move forward. Just one of the many ploys that will start to come out over the next few weeks. Building up everyone's hopes just before the election.

Sorry we have heard it all before.

I have been back in Burnley for 3 years and all I hear is talk..talk..talk about what the council plan to do to tidy up Burnleys dying and dirty areas. So far that is all it has been...just talk and money wasted on more surveys for various areas around town. The old saying of action speaks louder than words would do more for the council than all these ideas and talk that get tossed around. The people of Burnley are sick of paying rates and not getting much back for their money. They want a clean and tidy town to live and shop in. The slogan the council used when Burnley won promotion was "Premier Club, Premier Town". There's not much to gloat about with either at the moment.

The facts are that Burnley is just an old town built around a cotton factory based industry of old that no longer exists. Each strong cultural identity looking after number one without the whole wanting to integrate.
Sorry, but this is Lancashire, England after all said and done. Difficult to come to terms with perhaps but fact!

I think its time to give it up-- knock down the lot and make the town look decent ,The council has waisted enough time and too much council tax payers money on these eyesores

The Council seem very good at starting things, not so good at finishing them off. The whole town looks like a building site! I'm surprised there isn't a national scaffolding shortage because it's propping up all the buildings in Burnley! Just knock it down and give it up as a bad idea, like the Oval. I was never interested in shopping at the Oval either!
