Garage sale cost-cutter

6:30am Tuesday 16th March 2010

TOWN HALL bosses are considering selling 39 garages to help balance their books.

The council owns 77 garage sites, but a report says 39 “are poorly used and are a drain on resources” and can attract anti-social behaviour and vandalism.

In the council report, it identified possible options, such as retaining them as garage sites; developing them for housing; converting them to allotments, community gardens, open space or children’s play areas; or to sell them to adjoining tenants to extend their gardens.

The report came before the council’s economy, environment and transport scrutiny commission on Tuesday.

A decision about each garage site will be made in the next few months.
