Wards at Fairfield Hospital closed after Norovirus outbreak

A NUMBER of wards at Fairfield General Hospital have been affected by an outbreak of vomiting and diarrhoea.

This has resulted in a number of beds being unavailable and those affected wards have been closed temporarily to help control the outbreak.

A spokesperson for The Pennine Acute Hospitals NHS Trust, which runs Fairfield General Hospital, said: “Like many hospitals at this time of year, certain wards at Fairfield General Hospital are admitting patients with diarrhoea and vomiting and these patients are being given the best care available.

“In efforts to contain the virus and to ensure our patients are safe, we are asking patients and visitors not attend hospital unless necessary.

“We would like to stress the appearance of norovirus is not unusual at this time of year with many hospitals across Greater Manchester being affected. We would ask patients to follow the advice given by primary care and ambulance trusts to, wherever possible, avoid coming to hospital for treatment.”

Dr Peter Elton, director of public health for NHS Bury, added: "It’s not always possible to prevent getting norovirus, but good hygiene can help limit the spread of infection.

"This includes washing your hands frequently and thoroughly particularly after using the toilet, and before preparing food, and disinfecting any surfaces or objects that could be contaminated.

"If you have norovirus, try eating light meals, and to prevent getting dehydrated by drinking plenty of water. Avoid direct contact with others and preparing food for others until at least 48 hours after your symptoms have gone."
