TWO men have appeared in court after an attack in which a Burnley headteacher was allegedly glassed in a Rochdale restaurant.

Jermaine Carl Bullen, 26, of Albion Road, Freehold, pleaded guilty to wounding with intent at Bolton Crown Court yesterday.

Ian Kelly-Yuill, 24, of Bradley Smithy Close, Syke, did not enter a plea.

Bullen was granted bail but his co-accused was remanded into custody. They will both re-appear at Bolton on March 2.

The alleged incident took place at a restaurant in Milkstone Road, Rochdale, on February 17 last year.

Police released the pair from their police bail after an initial investigation, but rearrested them after forensic evidence was returned.

Kieran Heakin, a former mayor of Whitworth and father-of-three, suffered a broken nose, jaw and cheekbone and fractured eye socket during the alleged attack and needed re-constructive surgery.

He spent several weeks recovering in North Manchester General Hospital and at home in Shawclough, near Rochdale, following the alleged incident.

Mr Heakin made an emotional return to St John the Baptist RC Primary, Thames Avenue, Burnley, last May and said the occasion involved “hugs and tears”.

According to the 57-year-old, the children, staff and parents all contributed to what he described as a “fantastic” welcome back.
