AN anti-racism group is calling on Bolton Council to ban a planned rally by the English Defence League (EDL).
Bolton Against Racism says the rally by the Right-wing organisation, due to take place on March 6, could be stopped “if there was a will to do so”.
So far, attempts to ban rallies in Manchester, Birmingham and Stoke have proved unsuccessful.
The Home Office has said neither the police nor the Home Secretary, Alan Johnson, had the power to ban static demonstrations or assemblies unless trespassing was involved.
But Chris Chilton, from Bolton Against Racism, said: “It is a bit of a moot point, the suggestion that it cannot be banned.
“If there was a will to do so, then I am sure it could be stopped.
“As well as offences under the Public Order Act at previous rallies, incitement to racial hatred could also be used as a reason to ban it.”
The rally is taking place on the same day as two other events in Victoria Square — a Fair Trade market and a celebration by the Bolton Hindu Forum.
Mr Chilton added: “The two events clearly complement each other through the themes of community and diversity in Bolton.
“It’s the kind of day that makes Bolton a great place to live in.
“Both events will be threatened if hundreds of English Defence League supporters are allowed access to Victoria Square.”
Last week, EDL leader Tommy Robinson said the group would work with police but could not rule out a repeat of violence and flare-ups witnessed at previous protests.
Bolton Council is continuing discussions with Greater Manchester Police over how to control the rally.
The force has been praised for their policing of a recent EDL protest in Manchester city centre, A council spokesman said: “We understand the concerns of the local community and will be considering all options available to us.”
The EDL was formed last spring to give a voice to people opposed to extremist Islamic activities in the UK.
