Clitheroe town centre flower bed displays could become 'edible gardens'

Coun Rose Conner Coun Rose Conner

A SCHEME to turn flower beds into edible gardens in Clitheroe has been put forward by councillors.

As part of the project floral display boxes would be filled with vegetables which could be picked by local people.

In a motion to the town council Coun Rose Conner, has called for the three-tiered floral displays in the town centre to filled with vegetables instead of plants.

The idea was first mooted by voluntary group Transition Town Clitheroe (TTC), which is hoping to encourage businesses and people to work together to grow their own food.

Coun Connor said: “This scheme is about getting the community to source food in their locality because we are going into an era with a lack of oil and gas and our dependency on shipping food from various countries all over the world will have to cease.

“We need to move towards a locally-sourced economy and take responsibility as individuals for our own food production.”

TTC was set up in July last year by a group of volunteers and now boasts more than 100 members.

It hopes to imitate the Incredible Edible Todmorden group, which achieved national acclaim when it established herb gardens, promoted egg production and generated community orchards in the Calderdale mill town.

Chris Gathercole, secretary of the group, said: “Rather than waiting until the last minute, it would be best if we begin to adapt our lives now to a life without cheap oil.

“We need to prepare ourselves for the future so that we are more resilient and reduce our dependence on oil and one way of doing this is to grow our own food and reduce the air miles.”

The group, which is hoping to fund its scheme through government grants and donations, is in talks with businesses and organisations, such as Ribble Valley Homes, in a bid to encourage them to plant vegetables on any spare land.

I thought April Fools articles were only supposed to come out on the 1st of April??????

Still, this could be a profit-making opportunity for clitheroe's finest officers, anyone seen on cctv picking more than their fair share of carrots could be issued with one of their favourite fixed penalty notices. (if they arent still occupied counting the money they have clawed in for issueing fixed penalties to kids for throwing snowballs!)

While we are planting things perhaps a "weed" garden somewhere around the castle bandstand or skatepark so the scrotes who hang out there smoking the stuff can grow there own rather than keep the local dealer in business!?

Who are these idiots we have elected!!!!????

I'll wager that if the scheme goes ahead then the vegetables will never be short of nitrogen in their feed, if you know what I mean.

LOL

Proof, if we ever didn't need any, that Clitheroe councillors are completely out of touch with how the rest of the world has to live.

'We come in peace'

But have they employed Willy Wonka yet to produce the 'super fantastic flavoured edible ever lasting spearmint flavoured edible leaf'

It will have taken many a meeting to come up with this one .

This is great news as I have a huge garden, does this mean i will be able to fund my garden via government grants and donations?

Get real Michael.
If it's your own garden they'll slap a tax on what you produce. :-)

Am I reading this right. Being self sufficient in order to reduce our reliance upon oil. Well how about cows on our parklands, sheep on our roundabouts and donkeys in the Council Chambers. Oh sorry its already full of them!!

Your punctation is bad too. You only need one punctuation mark at the end of a sentence. Yes, I am the punctuation police. ;-)

I actually think this a good idea. Whilst people think it's a crazy idea, there is a statement being made here. As Clitheroe is traditional rural community, the council is actually making a statement that our food would be better if it was locally sourced.

Councils should encourage more locally grown vegetable, either by encouraging local allotments or encouraging diversity among the local farmers food production output.

Too many of us depend upon the supermarkets imported food which takes money out of the local economy. Grow your own or at least buy local.

there are some narrow minded, blinkered muppets out there. this idea is nothing new. It's something todmorden have been doing for some years - Incredible Edibles Todmorden. and yes it works.

I think the comments above say everything that needs to be said about Clitheroe's state of democratic affairs, and the close association of the Council with it's constituents.

Well done Nigel Evans. You are a true leader of the people, and the whole meaning of 'community cohesion'.
