A MYSTERY man who was found suffering from total amnesia in East Lancashire has been identified.

The man, now known to be an unnamed 28-year-old from Romania, was found collapsed outside a school in Langho last Monday afternoon.

Despite speaking fluent English, he was not able to tell police who he was, how old he was, or how he got there.

A passer-by discovered the man close to Langho and Billington St Leonard's Primary School, Whalley Road, Langho, at 2.15pm on December 28.

He was taken to Royal Blackburn Hospital, where he was found not to have any injuries.

Police launched a photo appeal and he was spotted by his Preston landlord, who contacted one of his friends.

Inspector Bob Eaton said: "We had a good response to our appeal in the Lancashire Telegraph and he has now been formally identified as a man from Romania who has been living in England for a number of years.

"On the night he went missing he was involved in an accident fire at his home address in Preston.

"Inquiries are ongoing with his family via the hospital. We are not 100 per cent sure, but we think he is now about ready to go home."

Officers had checked records kept by the hospital, mental health teams and the immigration service and took the man's finger prints to establish on the Police National Computer that he was not an offender.

Inspector Eaton added: "We're happy that there is nothing more more to be investigated from a police point of view, either in terms of a criminal offence or an immigration matter."
