Freezing temperatures and snow blight Bolton - more to come say weather experts

Showers of sleet and snow affected Bolton today but the worst of it has gone... for now.

The ground temperature has been below freezing for much of the day, leading to the formation of ice on untreated surfaces in many areas.

Ice was covered by snowfall, making roads and pavements dangerous, causing chaos on the roads.

Experts are still warning people in Bolton to drive safely amid fears the current snow will also ice over.

They are urging residents to be careful when out walking and to only make a journey if absolutely necessary.

The Met Office says parts of Bolton may be hit by between two and five centimetres of snow today.

Higher ground can expect up to 10cm.

Workers across Bolton are being sent home - staff at the University of Bolton have been told to take the rest of the week off.

Some are working from home or making alternative arrangements, travelling to satellite offices closer to home.

Manchester Airport is operating with some delays and cancellations. There are also delays at Leeds Bradford Airport and at Liverpool John Lennon Airport.

Much of the problem is due to harsh weather across Europe and the East Coast of America affecting outbound flights in the UK.

Journey times by road are massively increased - a simple 25 minute journey between Bolton and Bury is taking up to three hours.

Some drivers are complaining about a lack of gritters. They say roads get worse when they enter the Bolton borough.

Richard Evans, aged 28, from Breightmet, said: "Travelling towards Bury from Breightmet isn't posing a problem, the traffic appears fine and the roads towards Bury are relatively clear but coming the other way, into Bolton, it is horrendous and it gets bad the moment drivers cross the border.

"What makes matters worse is the road island which was built earlier in the year just after the lights near Netto. It has been a major problem ever since it was built but with the snow on top, it is 10 times worse."

GMPTE is advising passengers of severe disruptions to bus and tram services caused by the prolonged level of snowfall. Most bus services are operating but are subject to severe delays. Bury, Oldham, Rochdale and Wigan are the worst affected areas. Several services have been suspended as a result of the road conditions, while some are serving main roads only. A full list of the services currently affected is available below and online at www.gmpte.com. This is subject to change and updates will be provided. Updates can also be found at www.stagecoachbus.com and www.firstgroup.com. Metrolink is operating a 12-minute service via Piccadilly on all lines, but there could be some delays to services. Rail passengers are advised to check www.nationalrail.co.uk for service updates before travelling.

The AA has experienced its busiest night for 25 years and it has said councils across the country should have acted 'sooner' and 'more thoroughly' to make roads safe.

Greater Manchester is also experiencing severe weather conditions and police are asking the public to only call 999 in an emergency, where there is a threat to life or a crime in progress.

Greater Manchester Police Superintendent Karan Lee said: “I would like to reassure the public that we will attend all emergencies however our response vehicles could also be hindered by the adverse weather conditions and it may take us a little longer to get you. “I would also ask that you seriously consider the need to contact the emergency services before dialling 999, ensuring that we can focus on the people who need us the most.”

Police are also advising people to only travel if their journey is absolutely necessary.

What do you think of the road conditions? Could more have been done or was the extra snowfall unexpected? Leave your comments below.

What an absolute joke Bolton Council is! Last night, I was out on the roads for two and a half hours. Whilst out, I saw an empty gritter, spreading fresh air, three times! That isn't going to keep the roads clear. I have been informed today that once you are out of Bolton, all the main roads are clear. If the main roads are blocked, I cannot work! No work = no money! Remember that, Bolton Council, when I start refusing to pay my council tax coz I can't afford it!

The grit hopper on our close has
been empty since last Thursday. I conntacted the Highways department who logged my call and advised main routes are a priority.
I rang again on Saturday afternoon: however security answered as no one from highways in the department - rang again at 17.45 Monday 21st - again no one from the department available as they have probably gone home!! - The question has to be asked what sort of service are we paying for?

Bolton council is a disgrace. Safety is irrelevant to them as long as their backs are covered with petty loop holes.
I've spent the last two years without success at trying to get them to repair or resurface some of the pot hole filled roads all around Bolton.
For the last two days it seemed as if grit was rationed for only the steepest of roads and everything else was just ignored.
When you leave the Bolton Borough the roads do seem to get a lot better. When it's clear that they have failed to plan and prepare when there has been ample warning of the weather they should be billed individually for the extra travel time and fuel costs.
It's a pitty they aren't half as efficient as their countless traffic wardens.

bolton council are a joke. They have spent 120.000 on grit this year and 70.000 on a new gitter, saying in november "we wont be caught out this winter lol what a joke, I have not seen one yet. great lever has come to a stand still in most parts, The only reason the main roads are like slush is because of the cars nothing to do with the gritters. well the bolton bosses have egg on their face because yet again they have not stuck to what they say and left motorist stuck while they drive about in their 4x4's. Thats really what the 190.000 has gone on. some one needs to pay for this mess.BOLTON COUNCIL GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER all other towns are fine as i drove from bolton to billingham (northeast) today and the drive was smooth once i got off the A666 doin 20 mph because the gritters have not been out.

Having driven to Bury and back to see a friend this evening, i can confirm that the roads in Bury are a lot clearer of snow than Bolton, as you drive from Bolton Road over the Bolton border, down Bury Road, you can see the snow and ice straight away, What was the comment recently, " We are Ready " for what, Christmas!!

In Wigan the main roads were really bad, it took me ages getting out of there. I do think Bolton Council did a better job than last time we had snow, taking into account with the amount of snow we had.
