Get steamed up at museum

A MUSEUM is offering engine enthusiasts a different way of getting “steaming” this New Year.

The Bolton Steam Museum, which has a collection of 25 stationary steam engines from Lancashire mills, is holding an open day at the start of January.

Visitors will be able to see all of the museum’s engines in action, including two rare beam engines, as volunteers from the Northern Mill Engine Society fire them up for a public display.

David Lewis, from the society, said: “The engines show what happened when cotton was king — the thing that powered the industrial revolution. Without steam there wouldn’t have been an industrial revolution.

“It should be a good day out. We’re getting more children than we used to, and it’s wonderful to watch the little boys’ eyes light up when they come in and see all the machines working.”

The event, which is free, will run from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, January 2, and Sunday, January 3, at the museum in Mornington Road, Bolton. Go to www.nmes.org or call 01204 846490 for more details.
