A YOUTH has been locked up for four years after slitting a man’s neck with a razor blade in a vicious attack at a house party.
Dominic Weston, aged 19, of no fixed abode, slashed Adam Warrington’s neck during a fight on the front lawn of a flat in Collen Crescent, Brandlesholme.
Sentencing Weston to youth custody at Bolton Crown Court last Thursday, Judge Charles Mahon said he posed a serious risk to the public: “Fortunately, the complainant had made a good physical recovery. But one blow is all it needs to kill. The wound was an inch or two away from one of the main arteries.”
The court heard how, on August 12, Weston and a friend were invited to a low-key party at the flat. At about 9pm, Mr Warrington arrived with friends. Weston had met Warrington 18 months earlier and they had had disagreements.
For the prosecution, Lisa Bakker said: “The defendant was concerned with what would happen when their paths crossed. He went to the bathroom, got a razor blade and freed the blade, arming himself with it. Soon after, a fight broke out inside the house between the two. It continued outside the flat and the defendant was laid on top of the complainant. He took out the razor blade and slashed the victim’s neck with it.”
So much blood began pouring from the seven-inch wound on Warrington’s neck that he had to remove his t-shirt and tie it around the wound. He was taken to hospital and surgeons had to staple his neck together for five days.
In a victim impact statement read out in court, Mr Warrington said: “I feel like I am very lucky to be alive.”
Weston was arrested at the flat and later charged with a Section 18 assault, to which he pleaded guilty.
Defending, Mr Stuart Duke said: “He is genuinely remorseful. The complainant is somewhat bigger than him and, as the defendant was getting the better of him on the grass, he stupidly lashed out.”
