A PENSIONER has undergone surgery after he was attacked by a dog in the early hours of yesterday.
Roy Davies, aged 72, was walking along Darley Street, Farnworth, when he was bitten by the husky-type dog.
He was taken to the Royal Bolton Hospital where he underwent surgery for a seven-inch wound on his right arm. He was later transferred to Wythenshawe Hospital for further treatment.
Mr Davies had spent the night drinking in the Wellington pub, Market Street, Farnworth, and was making his way to his home in Darley Avenue when he was attacked at about 1.30am.
He fell to the ground and managed to fight off the dog, which was not on a lead, before getting back to his feet.
Daughter Jackie Whipday, aged 48, was staying at Mr Davies’ house and was woken at 2am when he banged on the door.
An ambulance was called and paramedics treated him at the house before taking him to hospital.
Last night, Mrs Whipday said the family had been shocked by what happened.
She said: “Everyone just can’t believe it. I wasn’t supposed to be there but if I hadn’t he would have collapsed on the floor.”
Mrs Whipday, who was staying at the house because it was close to where she works, added: “The orthopaedic surgeon looked at the arm and said it looked like it had been done by some electrical machinery. He said he had never seen anything like it.”
“It is right down to the muscle. He had an operation to clean the wound and remove more flesh so it doesn’t get infected.”
Mr Davies is due to have another operation tomorrow.
The dog is described as black and grey and is thought to have run off towards Market Street.
The incident has been reported to the police.
